Although David and Bathsheba did proceed to have intercourse in the vineyard,  the Bible does not explicitly state as to whether the  sex was consensual or whether it was some form of (as many biblical/ historical scholars have speculated) In an effort to conceal his affair with Bathsheba (who was by now several months pregnant) David summoned Bathsheba's husband Uriah back from the battlefields. David assumed that Uriah would re-consummate his marriage, and conclude that the babywas his own. But Uriah was to the ancient kingdom rule applying to warriors in active service.
